2025 Annual AMWA and Women in Medicine Legacy Foundation Lectureship: Special Screening of 1001 Cuts and Filmmaker Discussion

This September, we hosted a special screening of 1001 Cuts, an award-winning documentary that shines a light on the challenges and triumphs of women surgeons as they navigate the operating room and the broader landscape of medicine. Following the film, we hosted a conversation with the filmmaker, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the documentary and an opportunity to reflect on the film’s themes of resilience, equity, and change in the surgical field.

Dr. Sarah Temkin was joined by Dr. Kim Templeton (AMWA Past President) and Dr. Eileen Barrett (AMWA President). Dr. Elizabeth Garner (AMWA Past President) provided an opening welcome and closing.

About the Filmmaker

Sarah Temkin, MD is a first-time film maker. She was trained as a gynecologic oncologist and spent over 2 decades providing surgical and medical care for women with cancer of the female genital tract. She is widely published in the medical literature and has contributed throughout her career to conversations about equity in healthcare, including gender equity within the physician workforce. She was inspired to make this film, informed by her lived experience, after leaving clinical practice in 2020.
