Mentorship and Sponsorship

Mentorship That Moves Careers Forward

Effective mentorship is one of the most important determinants of career success. AMWA recognizes that helping women in medicine build fulfilling, rewarding careers often requires guidance beyond textbooks—sharing the “unwritten rules” and offering strategies to navigate the path ahead with confidence and purpose. As an AMWA member, you gain access to an extensive network of mentors at every stage of your journey—whether you’re a student exploring specialties, a resident seeking direction, or a physician considering a career transition. Mentorship can be short-term, to address a specific challenge, or long-term, providing a trusted sounding board as your goals evolve over time.

AMWA provides a wonderful network of physician leaders with opportunities for sponsorship to advance leadership and career opportunities. AMWA partnered with Dr. Julie Silver on a #SponsorHer campaign during women in medicine month.

What is Sponsorship?

“An action or a process in which a sponsor, generally though not exclusively someone with more influence and power than the person they are sponsoring, facilitates an opportunity for an individual that might lead to career benefits, including but not limited to accomplishments required for academic rank promotion that can be documented on a curriculum vitae.” (Silver J, 2023).

Retaining Women in Medicine Is a Billion-Dollar Imperative — Sponsorship Can Change the Future

The #SponsorHer campaign highlights the urgent need to sponsor women in medicine

Women make up much of the healthcare workforce, yet inequities, stalled promotion, and pandemic setbacks continue to drive costly physician departures—estimated at $500K per doctor and billions in losses nationwide. The #SponsorHer campaign calls for intentional, actionable sponsorship to advance women in medicine and strengthen the entire healthcare system. Supporting women isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s a strategic investment with profound returns.

Mentorship Groups

AMWA Mentorship Groups’ purpose is to provide a valuable, informative venue for guidance on a specific area of interest from one AMWA member to another. Physician Leaders are volunteering their time and expertise to uplift and equip our next generation of physicians with an extra piece of knowledge or confidence they need to succeed.

Special recognition to members of the AMWA Mentoring Committee who worked to make the first AMWA Mentoring Platform a reality: Amy Davis, MD, Elizabeth Jeans, MD, Irene Kalbian, MD, Morgan Levy, Nataly Montaño, MS, Selena Park, MD, Maya Roytman, and Alyssa Brown, MD, PhD.
