Become a Fellow of the American Medical Women’s Association

Honoring Excellence in Medicine and Science

The American Medical Women’s Association Fellowship Program serves to recognize and honor distinguished members of AMWA who have accomplished outstanding achievements in science, medicine, or academia. AMWA’s first class of fellows was inducted at AMWA’s Centennial Meeting in 2015. Maintenance of FAMWA requires continued national membership in AMWA.

AMWA Fellowship Criteria

Each criterion will be evaluated and weighted according to guidelines set by the AMWA Board of Directors, with a cumulative score determining fellowship candidacy.

Professional Qualifications

  • Applicants must be board certified in their field or (if retired) have been board certified while in practice.
  • Must have at least 5 years of clinical practice or professional experience post-residency/training.
  • Integrity: Candidates must have a professional record free of convictions, felonies, misdemeanors, or revoked licensure.

Leadership & Service

  • Leadership: 2+ years in a leadership position locally or nationally.
  • AMWA Ambassadorship, Service, and Membership: 5+ years of active leadership involvement (branch or national) supporting AMWA’s mission and vision.
  • Endorsement letters from 2 AMWA leaders (branch or national). Not required for Fast Track applicants.

Teaching & Scholarship

  • Teaching: 5+ years mentoring or teaching students or trainees at any level.
  • Contributions to publications that advance professional knowledge or benefit the medical community.

Additional Considerations

  • Extra consideration may be given for candidates with additional post-graduate training, work in policy or advocacy, public service, or significant leadership and recognition in other areas.

Fast Track Program

Current fellows of a recognized professional medical society may qualify for the “fast track to AMWA fellowship” program without endorsement letters. Candidates must have served AMWA in a leadership capacity and have worked towards AMWA’s mission to advance women physician and improve the health of women.

Nominate a Candidate for AMWA Fellowship

To nominate a candidate for AMWA Fellowship, you may complete a nomination form and send it to the candidate so that they can submit it with their nomination as an endorsement letter.

Application Process

Important Dates:

National membership status in good standing is required to complete your application.

There is a program application fee of $199. This application fee will be assessed after you have been appointed a fellow.

AMWA Fellowship Pin

All AMWA fellows will receive a fellowship pin.
