Sex and Gender Health Collaborative

Beginning in 2015, AMWA co-lead a series of Summits focused on addressing the gap in sex- and gender-specific healthcare. Despite increasing studies showing the growing data on sex and gender differences across conditions, this knowledge has not been systematically translated into medical curricula, clinical guidelines, or workforce training. As a result, clinicians are often underprepared to recognize how sex and gender influence disease presentation, treatment response, and health outcomes. These Summits were designed to bridge this gap by convening educators, researchers, clinicians, and policymakers to advance evidence-based integration of sex- and gender-specific science across the continuum of medical education and care.

In 2025, these Summits focused more specifically on women’s health education, aligning with AMWA’s longstanding mission to improve the health of women. We are grateful for our past and current partners in continuing to raise awareness, advance evidence-based education and accelerate the integration of sex- and gender-specific science into medical training and clinical practice. Together, these collaborations strengthen the foundation for more equitable, effective, and patient-centered care for women across the lifespan.

Since 2025, the Summits have been held during the AMWA Annual Meeting and are now an annual convening for leaders within this field to share research and education strategies and to advocate for increased awareness and policies to close the education gap.
