2025 Winners

My name is Sarah Osborn, and I am a 4th-year medical student at St. George’s University School of Medicine. I have been involved with SGHC for 2 years and oversee our educational factsheets and ScholarRx Bricks projects. In May, I presented our work at the 2025 AAMC Northeastern GEA/GSA/OSR Regional Conference. During the oral presentation, I showcased our methodology for creating factsheets, an example factsheet, and our recent surveys showing student growth and experience. I networked with several faculty members at various schools and was thrilled to hear their support for our work. Getting involved with SGHC opened a new world of medicine, and I am excited to continue advocating for the inclusion of sex- and gender-based medicine in curriculum and practice.
I am Yazmin Heredia Allegretti, a first-year Internal Medicine resident at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and a graduate of the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan in Mexico. I am honored to be a recipient of AMWA’s SGHC Scholarship and to have presented our work at the SGIM Annual Meeting, focusing on bridging gaps in medical education related to sex and gender diversity in medicine. As part of my role within the SGHC, I have served as a mentor contributing to the development of SGHC lectures on the ScholarRx platform, drawing on my prior experience as Chair of the Student Advisory Council, where I acted as a liaison between ScholarRx and the authors of the lectures, as well as the committee. My academic and professional interests focus on addressing healthcare inequities at the intersection of migration, social determinants of health, equity, and LGBTQ+ health, and I am particularly interested in pursuing a career in Infectious Diseases.

I’m Khushi Patel. During my gap year, I presented my work with AMWA’s Sex and Gender Health Collaborative Leadership at USC’s 22nd Annual Innovations in Medical Education Conference. I was able to address gaps in medical education regarding sex and gender differences within the medical curriculum and practice. I had the wonderful opportunity to engage in discussion and initiate dialogue with peers from diverse medical backgrounds at the USC conference. I was able to open the door to intersectionality in medicine, and I hope to continue representing this work to others of all backgrounds!
I’m Iris Dupanovic, a premedical post-baccalaureate student who serves as the Scholarship and Publications Chair and research assistant for AMWA’s Sex and Gender Health Collaborative. I had the opportunity to present our work at two conferences. At SGIM New England, I delivered an oral presentation that covered new developments from our factsheet initiative. Presenting our project as a talk allowed me to connect changes since our earlier dissemination to student and mentor feedback, and to explain how receiving the Medical Education Research and Innovation Challenge (MERIC) grant shaped our next steps. At the American Board of Medical Specialities (ABMS) conference, I presented our factsheet project and how this educational material can be used in medical training. Conversations with representatives from multiple specialty boards and organizations, such as the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), helped me better understand what leaders prioritize when evaluating education resources, espeically how they align with learner outcomes. Both conferences reinforced the initiative and broadened my thinking about its long-term impact.

2024 Winners

I’m Juliette Janiszewski. I currently work at Massachusetts General Hospital and hope to start PA school in 2025. I enjoyed the opportunity to present a poster for SGHC at the Society of General Internal Medicine National Conference in Boston, MA. This experience allowed me to expand on creating factsheets by evaluating the impact of this work. It was interesting to witness how many people were eager to learn more about the project and shared their own experiences of the importance of increasing accessibility to sex and gender-based medicine. Overall, my involvement in the project has expanded my understanding of patient-centric, individualized care and made me aware of vital gaps in research and clinical knowledge.
My name is Khushi Patel, and I am a current fourth-year student at the Ohio State University. I am graduating this May with a Bachelor of Arts degree. I majored in Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies and minored in Neuroscience. After graduating, I plan to take a gap year before applying to medical school. AMWA and SGHC have allowed me to foster a space with both my passion for medicine and advocacy for marginalized individuals. My experience at Ohio State University’s Spring Research Festival was a wonderful opportunity to share the research I have been working on for nearly two years. This was one step forward in opening the door for inclusion in education and beyond. I am honored and grateful to be a part of this movement.

My name is Monica Ybarra. I am a pre-medical undergraduate student at the University of Houston, double-majoring in Biochemistry and Anthropology. I joined the SGHC education initiative in the summer of 2022 and now co-chair the Evaluation and Publishing committee.
I attended the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) 2024 annual conference in Bergen, Norway. The conference was an incredible and valuable experience. I had the opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals who shared a deep passion for studying sex differences. Engaging in meaningful discussions and exchanging ideas with others who are equally enthusiastic not only broadened my perspective but also sparked new collaborations. The sense of community and shared enthusiasm was truly inspiring.
2023 Winners
My name is Iris Dupanovic, and I’m a Tufts University graduate and post-baccalaureate student currently taking coursework at Harvard Extension School as I prepare to apply to medical school. My involvement with AMWA SGHC was sparked by a presentation at the 2023 AMWA Annual Meeting, which opened my eyes to opportunities to take an active role in advancing inclusivity in medical education and research. In November 2023, I presented our factsheet initiative as a poster at the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) New England Regional Conference. Collaborating with other students and sharing our work with local physicians and medical students was very rewarding, and the conversations increased interest in our project.

I’m Courtney Gorrell, a third-year medical student at The University of Toledo College of Medicine. I joined AMWA during my first year and have helped with several committees over the years, most recently the AMWA 108th Annual Meeting planning committee. I joined SGHC in 2022, when volunteers were needed to help compile a set of factsheets on how sex and gender differences affect the pathophysiology and expression of various diseases and conditions. Since joining, I have gained a better understanding of the subject’s importance and the critical need for this information within medical education. I have worked with a great team of fellow students and physicians, and with their help, I presented our research at the SGIM 2023 Midwest Regional Meeting in Chicago.
