PubMed Sex and Gender Based Medicine Search Tool

This PubMed Search Tool was developed by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Sex and Gender Specific Health, and can also be found on the Sex and Gender Specific Health Website that SGHC now manages.

This tool exists to help search the MEDLINE database for SGBM specific literature. There are two version to use wtih the expanded version incoporating additional title words leading to a greater number of SGBM articles retrieved.

Basic Search String: (sex based OR sex factors OR sex distribution OR sex characteristics OR sex dimorphism OR gender difference* OR gender based) AND (gender[ti] OR sex[ti]) AND (Humans[Mesh] AND English[lang])

Expanded Search String: (sex based OR sex factors OR sex distribution OR sex characteristics OR sex dimorphism OR gender difference* OR gender based) AND (gender[ti] OR sex[ti] OR women[ti] OR female[ti]) AND (Humans[Mesh] AND English[lang])

To utilize the tool:

  1. Click on a version below, it will bring you to the PubMed website with autopopulation of articles
  2. Click on Advanced under Search box
  3. Under Actions, click the 3 dots, and Add Query
  4. Under Add terms to the query box enter in an additional search term (for example “cardiovascular disease”)
  5. Click AND. Now your additional search term should be added to the end of the Query box
  6. Click Search. Now you will have a list of SGBM articles on your search topic
  7. Repeat the process to add additional terms to your query box to narrow your search

SAGER guidelines were published in 2016 by the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) in order to provide a comprehensive outline for reporting sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and interpretations of findings.
