World Menopause Day is held every year on 18th October. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of menopause and support options available for improving health and well being.

Here’s some information from AMWA member, Dr. Juliana (Jewel) Kling.

  • For women less than aged 60 years, or within 10 years of menopause onset, without contraindications, the benefit-risk ratio appears favorable for the treatment of bothersome vasomotor symptoms and prevention of bone loss with menopausal hormone therapy.
  • There are a few contraindications to menopausal hormone therapy, and they include a personal history of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, blood clot (or those with a high risk of clotting), personal history of heart attack or stroke, and active liver disease.
  • For women who cannot or chose not to use hormone therapy, there are multiple non-hormone options available to treat vasomotor symptoms, including recently approved novel therapies and those currently under study.
  • Read the Menopause Society 2023 Non-hormone Therapy Position Statement.
