Tell us about your career
I am a maternal-fetal medicine physician specialist. I work with organizations to improve equal delivery of high-risk pregnancy care locally, regionally, and nationally using Telehealth clinical consulting services, developing partnerships, and teaching in the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Over the years, I have emerged as a strong advocate for Women in Medicine & Leadership through one-on-one motivational development, speaking engagements, and community service. Can you cite any particular instance(s) or individuals that influenced your choices?
My last 20 years of service in Women’s Health as an OBGYN and MFM physician have highlighted my tireless calling. I have the privilege to care for my fellow women and their unborn babies – often the sickest and most complex cases – with compassion and realism. I am both humbled and proud of the opportunity to provide medical care to these high-risk moms for the best possible outcome.
What challenges have you faced in your medical career?
My path has been anything but traditional. I was faced with challenges galore – as a woman, immigrant, single parent, trauma survivor, to name a few.
Given your lived experiences, do you have any advice for women in medicine?
“I rose Above. You can too.
So, walk the Rainbow with me.
Roll the past over your shoulders.
Live in the Present. Embrace the Future.”
Have you had an Ah-Ha moment? or, Is there anything else that has impacted your career trajectory or work within or outside medicine that has ben a significant influence?
In Summer 2022 at the time when my employer’s practice closed its doors in San Antonio, I knew I had the opportunity of a lifetime to serve in tandem my two-folded life missions: professionally, through my telemedicine practice TeleMed MFM: high-risk pregnancy care available to all women beyond borders or geographical limitations; and holistically through my book Push, then Breath and my platform Dr. Luissa K: asking all women to join in for self-empowerment, defining intentional presence, and resilience.
