As we close out Women in Medicine Month this year, we wanted to highlight this month’s activities:

September Premiere of 1001 CUTS on PBS

AMWA was proud to partner in the PBS premiere and screening of 1001 CUTS, the powerful documentary examining the experiences of women surgeons and the gender inequities that persist within medicine. If you haven’t seen this incredible film, please watch it here on PBS.

Annual Women in Medicine Lectureship

AMWA co-hosted the Annual Women in Medicine Lectureship with the Women in Medicine Legacy Foundation where luminary women physicians, Dr. Sandra Fryhofer (AMA President-elect) and Dr. Debra Houry (Former CDC Chief Medical Officer) spoke about courage and leadership in a conversation moderated by Dr. Vidhya Prakash (AMWA Secretary). If you missed the live event, view the recording here.

Celebrating Our AMWA INSPIRE Awardees

AMWA announced the recipients of the AMWA 2026 INSPIRE Awards, 31 women physicians who inspire others through their leadership, mentorship, innovation, advocacy, education, and service.

Presidents, Pioneers, and Progress: The Women Who Led AMWA

AMWA embarked on an ambitious project to highlight and recognize the more than 100 AMWA Past Presidents, women whose leadership helped transform the culture of medicine. The exhibit Presidents, Pioneers, and Progress: The Women Who Led AMWA will launch on or before November 18, AMWA’s 111th Anniversary.

Women in Medicine Month reminds us that progress is built across generations. And so we continue to carry on the legacy of those who have gone before us.

AMWA Journal Digitization Project

AMWA launched a journal digitization project to make more than a century of AMWA publications accessible to the broader public. These journals preserve the voices and experiences of generations of women physicians and others, documenting their contributions to medicine, the challenges they faced, and the issues they championed throughout AMWA’s history. Digitizing this collection will help preserve this important legacy while making it available to researchers, historians, physicians, students, and future generations. More information will be shared later this year.
