Women Physician Suffragists

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment,* AMWA launched this on-line exhibition to celebrate the important contributions of women physicians to the suffrage movement. Learn about these women leaders, who in addition to being physicians, helped advocate for equal voting rights for women of all professions.

*The 19th Amendment which granted women the right to vote was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919 and ratified on August 18, 1920. It was adopted as law on August 26, a day now commemorated as Women’s Equality Day. Despite the national law, local laws and restrictions still prevented women of color from voting in certain parts of the country. It would be several more decades before full voting equality was achieved for all women in the United States.
