The United Nations Summit of the Future was held September 22-23, 2024 in New York City. AMWA Global Health Lead, Dr. Padmini Murthy, and AMWA Maternal Health Lead, Dr. Gloria Bachmann. Read more about AMWA’s participation in this year’s UN General Assembly.
This landmark event was proposed by the United Nations Secretary General in 2021 in response to a call from “Member States for ideas on how better to address current and future challenges.” Progress in the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been challenging, with less than one fifth of the SDG targets being met or on track.
The Summit convened more than 4,000 leaders, representing heads of state and government, NGO’s, and civil society organizations, including AMWA. The primary agenda for the Summit was the adoption of a Pact for the Future with “56 Actions designed to ‘turbocharge’ the SDGs…in particular, to speed progress on issues around peace and security, global governance, climate change, digital cooperation, human rights, gender, youth and future generations.”
Dr. Padmini Murthy, who coordinated AMWA’s representation at the Summit stated, “The role of women in achieving the United Nations SDG goals cannot be underestimated. I was encouraged to see specific reference to women in 11 of the 56 action items of the Pact for the Future. Hopefully the Summit for the Future will ensure that the 2030 Goal of Leave No One Behind is attainable.”
“At the Summit of the Future, everyone who I introduced myself to as a representative of AMWA and who I told about our many initiatives focusing on the health and wellbeing of women, their children and loved ones had nothing but kudos and encouragement for our organization,” stated Dr. Gloria Bachmann. “Our commitment to bringing the best preventive and interventional medical care to all is critical in this time of pandemics and extreme climate change, adverse global changes which the Summit noted as a threat to all humans, animals, and plants.”
