In response to the devastating floods in Nepal, the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) has launched a new Disaster Relief Fund to support organizations providing critical assistance to affected communities.
The fund continues a remarkable tradition of service that stretches back more than a century. In 1917, AMWA established the American Women’s Hospitals Service (AWHS), mobilizing women physicians to bring medical care and humanitarian assistance to communities affected by war, disaster, displacement, and other crises around the world.
Today, AMWA carries that legacy forward.
Through the new Disaster Relief Fund, AMWA will mobilize its community to respond when disasters strike, with particular attention to the needs of women, children, and other vulnerable populations. Funds raised will support trusted organizations actively engaged in on-the-ground relief and recovery efforts.
The flooding in Nepal marks the first response through this new fund. As families face displacement, damaged infrastructure, disrupted access to health care, and the long process of recovery, AMWA is calling upon its members, partners, and friends to join together in support.
A century ago, women physicians stepped forward when the world needed them. Today, we continue their work.
