Voices from the Silenced: Pre-Roe Abortion Stories

About the Film: In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision which overturned Roe v. Wade, Victoria Rue and Martha Boesing, two friends with extensive theater history, felt the need to do something, so they solicited stories from other women in their senior living community about having abortions pre-Roe v. Wade. Many who responded had never told their stories before – to anyone. From these stories, Rue and Boesing created a play, “Voices from the Silenced,” a powerful production illuminating the realities countless women faced before Roe v. Wade and would now be facing again. Through an introduction by Dr. Laurel Waters, AMWA partnered with Rue and Boesing and Luna Productions to support the creation of a film of the play, artfully capturing the urgency of the performance and the play’s insistent message. The film premiered on April 26, 2024 in California.
