The American Medical Women’s Association has partnered with Capital Media Group to produce Breakthrough Women in Science & Medicine, a documentary series that airs across the Public Broadcasting System (PBS).

This educational initiative spotlights the success of women within the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics + Arts (STEAM) fields. Each 30-minute documentary-style television episode features the story of breakthrough women through informative and inspiring interviews celebrating their accomplishments and examining how they overcame challenges to succeed in medicine and/or science. Our goal is to inspire young women to pursue a career in the STEAM fields.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economics and Statistics Administration, “Despite making up nearly half of the U.S. workforce, women are still vastly underrepresented in the STEM workforce.”

The Breakthrough Women in Science & Medicine series reaches a large U.S. broadcast audience on PBS channels nationwide, on the PBS app, and PBS OTT channel but we are also targeting a significant audience of educators, community leaders, advocates, and policymakers. This educational series is distributed to 70,000 U.S. schools, 26,000 public and academic libraries, STEM industry news, and social media platforms. Our total reach worldwide through these distribution channels equals more than 40 million students and faculty members. When completed, this series will also be offered to cable networks nationwide as FCC qualified I/E content.

AMWA has been working to develop a team of nonprofit, association, and industry supporters that would like to participate in this documentary series as financial supporters, provide research and historical files, recommend inspiring women, or offer relevant shoot locations. We feel this project will benefit the collective group of supporters by challenging preconceptions and examining the positive role women hold within these career fields.

All financial supporters will be identified through Public Television compliant video billboards and all on-camera interviews, shoot locations, and content contributors will be identified within the program’s credits. Each billboard will meet PBS standards and will be displayed at the open and close of the documentary i.e. “The following program was made possible through a generous contribution from…”.

AMWA is currently identifying companies and organizations who find value in documenting both the historical role women have played in STEAM and also the modern day impact and contributions women are having in these career fields. We hope this project will spark interest, dialogue, create understanding, and contribute to the advancement of women in STEAM.
