This month, AMWA President Dr. Susan Hingle was honored with the ATHENA Leadership Award, an international award which is presented to a woman or man for professional excellence, community service, and support of women in attainment of professional excellence and leadership. Founded in 1982, the program has since honored more than 7000 exemplary leaders in over 500 communities. This highly competitive award requires demonstration of excellence, creativity, and initiative in one’s chosen business or profession, provision of valuable service to improve the quality of life within one’s community, active assistance of others, particularly women, in achieving their own leadership potential, and facilitation of ATHENA’s mission and goals by actively engaging in meaningful ways to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Dr. Hingle is a tireless advocate for women in medicine, having mentored and sponsored generations of women physicians in her multiple roles at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as Associate Dean for Human and Organizational Potential, Chair of the Department of Medical Humanities, and Director of Faculty Development. She is a graduate of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program. For her long-time service and commitment to women in medicine, she received the AMWA Elizabeth Blackwell Career Award in 2021. Dr. Hingle has also been active in the American College of Physicians (ACP), having served as both Chair of the ACP Board of Regents and Chair of the Board of Governors. She was honored with ACP’s McDonald Award for Young Physicians and was recognized with the John Tooker Evergreen Award for Chapter Innovation.
Dr. Hingle has also been the recipient of the Golden Apple Award, the Excellence in Teaching Outstanding Teacher Award, the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, the Most Influential Faculty Award, and the Chair’s Resilience Award. She has also been active nationally in the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine and the American Medical Association.
Congratulations to Dr. Hingle for this well-deserved honor.
