The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) participated in the annual conference of the American Association of Medical Society Executives (AAMSE) this past month in Louisville, Kentucky. The meeting brought together medical society executives and professional staff from state, county, and national specialty medical societies across the country to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore new approaches to organizational leadership.
AMWA Executive Director Dr. Eliza Chin presented a session titled “From Purpose to Impact: Advocating with Vision, Voice, and Values,” highlighting how physician organizations can strengthen their advocacy efforts by remaining grounded in mission while building strategic partnerships and creating meaningful opportunities for member engagement. She shared insights gained from AMWA advocacy efforts and trainings centered on communication with empathy and finding common ground.
The conference featured a wide range of educational sessions focused on the evolving needs of medical societies. Topics included achieving success without burnout, harnessing individual and team strengths, navigating high-pressure stakeholder engagement, leveraging emerging technology tools, developing non-dues revenue streams, and fostering psychological safety within organizations.
The conference opened with an inspiring keynote address by Taryn Smith, who spoke about finding resilience and building community in times of change. The second keynote, “Self-Love, Selfless Leadership, and Magnetic Cultures,” was delivered by Erin Diehl, who challenged attendees to cultivate authentic leadership while creating organizational cultures where individuals and teams can thrive. Diehl is the author of I See You! A Leader’s Guide to Energizing Your Team through Radical Empathy. She also led a highly impactful C-suite leadership session featuring practical exercises designed to help executives inspire, motivate, and empower their teams.
The meeting ended with a Physician Panel with medical society board presidents, an Ethics of AI Panel, discussions among society representatives.
The conference provided valuable opportunities to connect with leaders from medical societies representing diverse specialties and regions across the country. AMWA looks forward to building new collaborations with county, state, and specialty medical societies to advance women physicians, strengthen physician leadership, and improve the health of women.
