A Documentary Honoring Women in Medicine

The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) is proud to announce a partnership with Video Project to launch a global impact campaign centered on the award-winning documentary 1001 Cuts. This initiative seeks to advance equity in healthcare while honoring the contributions and challenges of women in medicine.

1001 Cuts shines a spotlight on the difficult culture that persists for women physicians in surgery. Through candid interviews, the film amplifies the voices of women surgeons across specialties and backgrounds. It not only exposes the pervasive inequities in surgical practice but also highlights solutions—offering hope and inspiration to the next generation of women in medicine.

1001 Cuts is a call to action to build workplace cultures within medicine where talent, hard work, and leadership are recognized,” says Dr. Sarah Temkin, creator and producer of the film. “The film also serves as an educational tool to improve the culture for women in medicine and beyond.”

With women physicians consistently demonstrating strong outcomes in communication, preventive care, surgical results, and patient survival rates, the stakes are clear. By building supportive infrastructures for women in medicine, the health of entire communities stands to benefit.

Why This Partnership Matters

“Real change is neither top-down nor instantaneous; it’s the sum of countless small, sustained efforts,” says Dr. Eliza Chin, Executive Director of AMWA. “Together, we can change the culture in medicine and elevate care for everyone.”

Through shared values of equity, inclusion, and sustainability, AMWA and Video Project are working to dismantle barriers faced by women in healthcare and other sectors. 1001 Cuts is designed to spark dialogue within the medical community, among trainees, and with the broader public.
