AMWA is proud to announce the publication of the proceedings from the 2025 Education Summit on the Health of Women, a collaborative initiative advancing the integration of sex and gender science into medical education, research, and clinical care.
The proceedings capture key insights, recommendations, and action priorities from national and international experts working to close critical gaps in how sex and gender differences are understood and applied in healthcare. The publication highlights the growing movement to ensure that medical education and health systems reflect the biological and sociocultural factors that influence health outcomes.
“Since the first Summit in 2015, AMWA has been committed to advancing sex and gender specific education in medical curricula. These issues influence nearly every aspect of health—from disease presentation to treatment response,” said Dr. Eliza Chin, Executive Director of the American Medical Women’s Association. “AMWA was honored again to be the lead sponsor of this program.”
The Sex and Gender Health Education Summits convene leaders across academic medicine, research institutions, healthcare systems, and advocacy organizations to advance a shared goal: ensuring that sex and gender differences are systematically incorporated into medical education and clinical guidelines. This past summit was renamed Education Summit on the Health of Women to reflect the impact that these summits have had on closing the gap in women’s health. Future summits will be integrated into a track during the AMWA Annual Meeting. Check out the 2026 agenda at bit.ly/amwameeting.
Key themes emerging from the proceedings include:
- Advancing the integration of sex and gender science across healthcare curricula
- Addressing persistent research gaps affecting women’s health outcomes
- Improving clinical decision-making through datadisaggregated by sex
- Strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations to accelerate implementation
- Building the next generation of leaders in sex and gender health research
The publication also reflects the contributions of a growing network of organizations participating in AMWA’s Sex and Gender Health Collaborative (SGHC), which works to expand awareness and adoption of sex- and gender-informed healthcare.
“Integrating sex and gender science into medical education is essential for delivering high-quality, evidence-based care,” said Dr. Mary Rojek, lead chair of the 2025 Summit. “These proceedings reflect the collective commitment of educators, researchers, and clinicians across health disciplines who are working together to ensure that future healthcare professionals are equipped with the knowledge needed to care for diverse patient populations.”
For more than a century, AMWA has championed the advancement of women physicians and the improvement of women’s health. Through initiatives such as the Sex and Gender Health Education Summits, AMWA continues to support research, education, and policy efforts that strengthen the future of medicine and improve the health of women.
