Meet the Speakers
Rana Lee Adawi Awdish, MD, MS, FACP, FCCP
Dr. Rana Awdish is the author of In Shock, a critically acclaimed, bestselling memoir based on her own critical illness. Dr. Awdish received the prestigious Schwartz Center’s National Compassionate Caregiver of the Year Award in 2017. She was named Physician of the Year by Press Ganey in 2017 for her work on improving communication and received the Critical Care Teaching Award in 2016. She has been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. In 2020, the podcast This American Life documented the COVID pandemic in Detroit in an episode entitled The Reprieve, using Awdish’s audio diary of Henry Ford Hospital employees’ experience during that time. She was named a Healthcare Hero by US News and World Report in 2020 for her work during the pandemic.
A pulmonary and critical care physician, she serves as the current Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Henry Ford Hospital. She also serves as Medical Director of Care Experience for the System, where she has integrated compassionate communication strategies and Narrative Medicine practice into the curriculum. Her narrative non-fiction essays have been published in The Examined Life Journal, Intima, CHEST and The New England Journal of Medicine. She has written editorials for The Harvard Business Review, Annals of Internal Medicine, The Washington Post and The Detroit Free Press. Her essay The Shape of the Shore was awarded a Sydney by the New York Times and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her book has been translated into multiple languages and is included in medical school and post-graduate curricula throughout the US and UK. Prior to coming to Henry Ford, Dr. Awdish completed her training at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in Manhattan. She attended Wayne State University Medical School and completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Jessi Gold, MD, MS
Jessi Gold, MD, MS, is the Chief Wellness Officer of the University of Tennessee System and an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. This inaugural leadership position encompasses all five University of Tennessee campuses, UT Knoxville, UT Chattanooga, UT Southern, UT Martin, and UT Health Science Center, and makes up about 59,000 students and 19,0000 faculty and staff. In her clinical practice, she sees healthcare workers, trainees, and young adults in college.
Dr. Gold is also a fierce mental health advocate and highly sought-after expert in the media on everything from burnout to celebrity self-disclosure. She has written widely for the popular press, including for The New York Times, The Atlantic, InStyle, Slate, and Self. Her first book, HOW DO YOU FEEL? One Doctor’s Search for Humanity in Medicine is out October 8, from Simon Element, and available for preorder now. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (with a degree in anthropology), the Yale School of Medicine, and the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry, she spends her free time traveling with her friends, watching live music (especially Taylor Swift) or mindless television, and on walks with her dog, Winnie. Susan Thompson Hingle, MD, is president of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), and has served on the Board of Directors for the past several years. Dr. Hingle is committed to advancing women in medicine, changing the culture of medicine, and assuring that women physicians thrive.
As contributor to the AMWA/Korn Ferry Women in Medicine report, Women in Medicine: Setting the Agenda for Change, Co-chair for AMWA’s 2022 Annual Meeting, and senior author on the ACP policy paper on gender equity in physician compensation and career advancement, Dr. Hingle strongly believes that we must focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as physician well-being and fulfillment, if we are going to be able to reach our full potential as individuals, organizations, and as a profession.
