Alabama Listening Session of Reproductive Care
Impact of Recent Court Cases on Reproductive Care
Wednesday, April 24, 2024

The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) and Doctors for America (DFA) welcome you to participate in a Listening Session as an opportunity for women in medicine to come together to consider the challenges in patient care and strategies to advocate for evidence-based care.
The recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that upholds that “personhood” applies to embryos was based on the state’s wrongful death statute extending to “extrauterine children.” What does this mean for fertility treatment?
With more than a third of states considering a fetus to be a “person” at some point during pregnancy, the stringent regulations regarding embryo status portend dire consequences for reproductive care for physicians and physicians-in-training as well as anyone seeking fertility care, as is now the case in Alabama.
In other news:
- FLORIDA: The state Supreme Court issued a ruling Monday that triggered a six-week abortion ban passed by the state legislature last year; in a separate decision the court allowed a “ballot measure to go to voters that would enshrine abortion rights in Florida’s constitution.”
- ARIZONA: Arizona can enforce an 1864 law criminalizing nearly all abortions, court says (AP)
Let’s come together to consider the far-reaching implications of reproductive care given the Alabama Supreme court decision, the cases in Florida and Arizona and subsequent legislation on reproductive care.
We want to hear what the changing state legislation means to you. How are you coping?
Let’s consider where we need to focus our advocacy efforts.
Organized by the AMWA Fertility Executive Committee in partnership with Doctor’s For America
