AMWA launched the State Director Initiative six months ago with a simple but powerful vision: Empower women physicians to lead where they are and amplify their voices in their state. Since then, this growing community has demonstrated that meaningful change begins locally and gains strength through connection.

State Directors serve as state leaders, reaching out to AMWA members across the state. The aim is to strengthen AMWA’s national network through local engagement. promote events, professional development opportunities, and advocacy while elevating women’s health issues that matter among colleagues in their communities. The role is intentionally flexible, allowing state leaders to contribute in ways that align with their interests, strengths, and schedules. Some have hosted networking gatherings, others have introduced AMWA to colleagues, shared advocacy initiatives, or promoted programs offered at the national level.

The benefits extend far beyond service. State Directors expand their professional networks, increase their visibility as leaders, and help shape AMWA’s advocacy priorities and programming. Equally important, they join a supportive cohort of peers across the country who share ideas, celebrate successes, and learn from one another as the initiative evolves.

AMWA provides robust support through a dedicated Resource Hub and connection with other state directors and regional governors. State directors are further supported with regular meetings to share experiences and gain inspiration, and the ability to apply for a microgrants to support local membership-building efforts. These resources ensure that every State Director has the tools needed to make an impact.

The initiative continues to grow, and there has never been a better time to become involved. AMWA physicians who are not yet State Directors have a unique opportunity to help shape the future of this emerging program while building leadership experience and professional capital along the way.

Leadership begins with a single step. AMWA invites you to lead locally to provide members with a greater appreciation for the benefits of their membership. By becoming a State Director, you can make a meaningful difference for women in medicine.
