The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) proudly supports the upcoming Women’s Health Research Day (Jan 25), recognizing the critical importance of advancing rigorous, inclusive research that improves the health of women across the lifespan. This year also marks the 35th Anniversary of the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) and the 10th anniversary of Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV). AMWA has long championed the foundational principle of SABV through the Sex and Gender Health Collaborative and the Sex and Gender Health Education Summits, which elevate sex- and gender-specific science across education, research, and clinical practice. From equitable representation in clinical trials to translating discovery into care, women’s health research drives better outcomes for all. AMWA celebrates the leadership of researchers, clinicians, and advocates—and the enduring impact of the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health—as we reaffirm our commitment to closing gaps, elevating lived experiences, and advancing evidence-based care for women everywhere.

Dr. Rita Kuwahara represented AMWA at the 35th Anniversary Reception for the ORWH, hosted by the Friends of the ORWH, of which AMWA is a steering committee member (representative Dr. Theresa Rohr-Kirchgraber).

Here is an excerpt from Dr. Kuwahara’s remarks:

“What an honor to be here today to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the ORWH and the upcoming Women’s Health Research Day.

For over a century, the American Medical Women’s Association has been committed to advancing women physicians and improving the health of women. Central to this mission is our longstanding leadership in promoting women’s health education and the understanding of sex- and gender-based differences – ensuring that research informs clinical care to improve health outcomes across the lifespan.

For 35 years, ORWH has been an essential partner in this work, and we are grateful for the leadership of Dr. Vivian Pinn and Dr. Janine Clayton to advance women’s inclusion in research, cultivate the next generation of investigators, and strengthen pathways for biomedical discovery. These priorities align deeply with AMWA’s mission and belief that when women are fully represented in research and leadership, science and medicine are stronger for everyone.

Thank you to Friends of ORWH and Society for Women’s Health Research for convening this community of champions. Congratulations ORWH on 35 extraordinary years and for leading the way in advancing women’s health research.”
