Mentorship and Sponsorship

Effective mentorship is one of the most important determinants of career success. AMWA recognizes that helping women in medicine build fulfilling, rewarding careers often requires guidance beyond textbooks—sharing the “unwritten rules” and offering strategies to navigate the path ahead with confidence and purpose. As an AMWA member, you gain access to an extensive network of mentors at every stage of your journey—whether you’re a student exploring specialties, a resident seeking direction, or a physician considering a career transition. Mentorship can be short-term, to address a specific challenge, or long-term, providing a trusted sounding board as your goals evolve over time.

“One of my favorite things about AMWA is the breadth of knowledge and experience among our members. Whether they are looking for advice about salary negotiations, or want to talk to other physicians who’ve experienced fertility issues, or are trying to decide on a subspecialty, this platform will help members tap into the AMWA brain trust.”

— Katherine Sharkey, MD, PhD, Former AMWA Mentorship Chair; Associate Dean for Gender Equity at the Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School

Throughout the year, the AMWA mentorship committee hosts webinars with various keynote speakers to address specific topics about medicine, career/networking advancement, or work-life balance that our members have requested. Please click below for a list of upcoming webinars and for links to sign-up for these sessions.

AMWA Members have access to all past event recordings in the AMWA Learning Hub.

Mentorship Groups

AMWA Mentorship Groups’ purpose is to provide a valuable, informative venue for guidance on a specific area of interest from one AMWA member to another. Physician Leaders are volunteering their time and expertise to uplift and equip our next generation of physicians with an extra piece of knowledge or confidence they need to succeed.
