SUMMARY:Facing Moral Distress in Medicine: Strategies to Address this Common Dilemma
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 18th June at 8pm ET\nFacing Moral Distress in Medicine: Strategies to Address this Common Dilemma\nwith Rebekah Apple\, MA\, DHSc\nREGISTER \n In a 2022 article\, published in the Journal of Health Psychology\, more than one half of physicians were reported to experience moderate to high levels of moral distress. Moral distress arises when a physician is unable to take the action they know is right\, due to constraints outside their control\, from not feeling comfortable speaking up to feeling the need to compromise on clinical care.  This session will focus on how physicians can reconcile their preferred action with the actions available to them.  Participants will gain strategies to address such dilemmas in their professional environment so as to lessen the adverse impact on the career journey. \nRebekah Apple\, MA\, DHSc\nDirector\, Master’s of Medical Management\, Carnegie Mellon University Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy\nRebekah Apple is also Carnegie Mellon faculty\, teaching organizational ethics in the MMM program and Applied Ethical Analysis to graduate students from all CMU colleges. She is a medical ethicist for University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and teaches bioethics to first and third year medical students at the University of Pittsburgh.

SUMMARY:Radical Harmonies Film Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The AMWA LGBTQIA+ Committee and Women In Medicine have partnered to\nCELEBRATE PRIDE Month with RADICAL HARMONIES!\n\n\n\nFeaturing a discussion with the filmmaker\, Dee Mosbacher\, MD PhD\nWatch the documentary in advance and then join us on June 18th for an evening zoom discussion with Dee and special guests.\nLive Discussion: Tuesday\, 18th June at 8pm ET\nWATCH Documentary     Watch Recording of Film Discussion in AMWA Learning Hub \nCelebrate PRIDE Month and the power of the women’s health movement with Dee Mosbacher as she discusses her film\, Radical Harmonies. \n \nDee Mosbacher\, MD\, PhD; Photo by Morgan Lieberman \n\nDee has been an activist for women’s health since the early 1970s. During medical school and psychiatric residency\, she began a second career as a documentary filmmaker\, co-producing Closets Are Health Hazards: Gay and Lesbian Physicians Come Out and Lesbian Physicians on Practice\, Patients\, and Power. In response to the 1992 election in which the Republican Party used homophobia as a fundraising tool (while her father was H.W. Bush’s Secretary of Commerce and then chief fundraiser)\, she co-produced and directed Straight from the Heart\, which received an Academy Award™ nomination. Dee produced or co-produced a total of 9 documentaries on homophobia including Out for a Change: Addressing Homophobia in Women’s Sports; All God’s Children; DeColores; and No Secret Any More: The Times of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon. These films have received a total of 46 awards—from LGBTQ+\, Black\, Latina\, Latin American\, and Aging Media film festivals\, including best of show awards\, grand jury awards\, and audience awards\, in the U.S.\, U.K.\, Australia\, Cuba\, Mexico\, and Italy. The films have touched people’s lives across the world\, changed people’s minds about homophobia\, and improved the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. Dee and spouse\, who is also a psychiatrist\, Nanette Gartrell\, worked to eliminate homophobia in the DSM. \nRadical Harmonies is the first in-depth study of the women’s music festivals of the 1970’s and 1980’s. This full-length documentary chronicles the Women’s Music Cultural Movement and its evolution from a “girl with guitar” to a revolution in the roles of women in music and culture. The movement gave birth to an alternative industry that changed women and music forever. In addition\, the first surveys of women’s health\, with attention to lesbian health\, were conducted at these music festivals. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Voices from the Silenced: Pre-Roe Abortion Stories Discussion
DESCRIPTION:AMWA partners to present the film production of a new play\, Voices from the Silenced: Pre-Roe Abortion Stories\nView Film\, Then Join Us for Playwright Discussion on June 24th at 8 pm ET\nTune in for the June 24 Playwright Discussion \n   Watch the Film \nAbout the Film: In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision\, overturning Roe v. Wade\, Victoria Rue and Martha Boesing\, two friends with extensive theater history\, living in a senior community in Northern California\, felt the need to do something\, so they solicited stories from other women about having abortions pre-Roe v. Wade. Many of those who responded had never told their stories before – to anyone. From these stories\, Rue and Boesing created a play\, “Voices from the Silenced\,” a powerful docu-drama illuminating the realities countless women faced before Roe v. Wade and will now be facing again. AMWA partnered with Victoria and Martha and with the expertise and support of Luna Productions and others\, a film was created\, artfully capturing the urgency of the performance and the play’s insistent message. \nVoices from the Silenced: Pre-Roe Abortion Stories (57 min) produced by Luna Productions \n  Host a Screening    Make a donation to support the film outreach \nDonations above $500 will be recognized in the film credits (deadline July 31) \nShare on Twitter   Share on Instagram   Share on LinkedIn   Share on Facebook \n
