COVID-19 starkly exposed and amplified longstanding disparities affecting women’s health, economic stability, caregiving burdens, and safety. Women physicians — already navigating pay inequities, burnout, and bias—faced disproportionate risks and workforce pressures throughout the pandemic. For AMWA, the pandemic underscored the urgent need to advance gender-equitable policies, support the well-being of women in medicine, and strengthen systems that protect the health of all women.

In 2021, AMWA Artist-in-Residence, Dr. Karen Poirier-Brode created Six Feet Apart, an accordion-style book depicting social distancing. A clear polymer background symbolized the face masks and other barriers. The 6ft/2m circles marked the distance between people. You’ll notice that I chose an imprint of high heels. The love stethoscope seemed the best image for this lady doctor.
AMWA endorsed the Obesity Bill of Rights, created by the National Consumer’s League anesd the National Council on Aging with a focus on the rights for all people to receive person-centered, quality obesity care. AMWA is a member of the EveryBODY Covered Campaign, lead by the Alliance for Women’s Health and Prevention, to ensure that patients can have the access they need for the treatment of obesity

AMWA hosted a Congressional Briefing to address the need for legislation that would support comprehensive treatment of obesity as a chronic disease.
AMWA convened stakeholder organizations for a roundtable in 2022, including: ACOG ADCES, ABC, HealthyWomen, NPWH, NCOA, NON, NBNA PCNA, and WomenHeart.
