AMWA advances women’s leadership in global health through engagement with the United Nations, World Health Assembly, and the Medical Women’s International Association. Through the American Women’s Hospitals Service and the Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellowship, AMWA supports humanitarian initiatives, advances gender equity, and strengthens global health capacity.

AMWA at the United Nations and World Health Assembly
AMWA is associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications, and its leaders have served as delegates to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the World Health Assembly, and other international forums. AMWA co-hosts side events focused on women’s health issues and gender equity during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the United Nations General Assembly, and the World Health Assembly.

AMWA’s Global Presence and Partnerships
AMWA is a member of the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA), connecting members with women physicians worldwide. In 2019, AMWA hosted the MWIA Centennial Congress in New York City. AMWA physicians hold dual MWIA membership, while trainees and non-physicians receive associate membership, with opportunities to engage in MWIA committees and leadership. AMWA also participates in the World Health Organization Civil Society Commission and is affiliated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications, regularly co-sponsoring side events at the World Health Assembly, United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, and United Nations General Assembly.
Over a Century of Supporting Humanitarian Aid
The American Women’s Hospitals Service (AWHS) is a cornerstone of AMWA’s global health efforts, extending care, compassion, and expertise to underserved communities around the world. Founded in 1917 to provide medical relief during World War I, AWHS continues to advance AMWA’s commitment to service through international aid, capacity building, and support for women medical students and residents participating in global health programs and community programs.

Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellowship
The Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellowship provides early-career physicians and trainees with the opportunity to deepen their engagement in global health through mentorship, leadership development, and project-based experience. Named in honor of Dr. Anne C. Carter, a lifelong advocate for international service and women’s health, the fellowship equips participants to address global health challenges, promote equity, and continue AMWA’s legacy of healing across borders.
